Anyone have tips on how to slow down my thinking or keep good pace. I do count out my 1-2-3 5-6-7, but sometimes I inadvertably start speeding up and then forget my pauses.
Sometimes the best thing to do is to focus on matching the counts to the music. We tend to get nervous or distracted with the counts when thinking about doing a combination (I know its hard!) :-).
However, if you are dancing on1, make sure you are hitting the 1,3,5,7 to the song. Counting and making sure you are stepping on the (for example) cowbell will help you keep in pace with the music. If dancing on2, make sure it is happening to the conga slap (2 and 6).
My wife suffers from the same malady. I listen to music like a fiend on the way to work and actually step to the music while the cruise control is working (I know a saftey concern but it’s like midnight on the way home and the road is clear).
My biggest piece of advice is music immersion (Don’t overdose).
If you are practicing, try finding music that is Very obvious in it’s timing beats.
Repitition breads comfort. (Good excuse to dance some more ;2)
if u count out loud 123, u could count in your mind 4 , likewise, after 456, just couunt 8 in your mind.. there is no way u’ll miss the pause.. later.. after ‘misic immersion’ and ‘repititoin’.. it’l become natural.
Since the time I took two private lessons to fix a few things I have noticed that I think a lot less when dancing now giving me more time to focus on timing and pauses. And now not pulling on the girl so much when dancing.
