As everyone already knows I have been working on a documentary on the San Diego salsa scene. I already posted episode 1, but not finished yet. I had to stop production time due to congress, projects, and finals. After tomorrow I will be able to start on Episode 2. My goal is to be done before Christmas. So what is so special about episode 2? Any guesses? Well, episode 2 will incorporate interviews with David and Jennifer Stein from Majesty in Motion, Iran Castillo from Son y Pasos, Sergio and Gaby from Alma Latina, Laura Mendoza from Salsa Divas, Serena Cuevas from Deseo Dance Co., and hope to interview many more. I’m still waiting to interview Mr. A2S himself as well as his partner Julie Merrill. At any rate I am very excited about Episode 2 and want to see what everyone wants to see. Is there any questions the audience has for these wonderful dancers? You never know, your question may even be included in the documentary….If you guys have any questions, comments, or concerns please tell me

Everyone knows about the great David Stein here in San Diego, directory of Majesty In Motion Dance Co. (I’m currently on their Pro Team). Well, I just found one of my favorite (and funniest) instructional dance videos of him from way back in Orange County, CA. Since I am always about learning how to shoot better instructional videos, I take cue from this one: Never try to shoot videos while intoxicated. This is all in good fun.

I’m sure “my time” will come someday where I will have to look back at videos of myself teaching and dancing from the Iowa State years… but until then, I thought I’d share the “salsa classics”.

This is an AMAZING routine! It is Victor and Burju (Hacha y Machete, Boston) in an all cha cha routine at the San Diego Salsa Festival. Enjoy

After a year I have been recording the subculture of salsa, more specifically the San Diego salsa scene. I have been collecting clips of interviews, performances, team practices, social dancing, and everything in between. The other reason I have been putting off this project is due to procrastination. Overall, the way the salsamentary will be developed is through a series and every week there will be a new episode.
So why San Diego, besides the fact I live there?
Well, compared to the salsa scene in L.A. or New York, the scene in San Diego is relatively small, but has a lot of outside influences like L.A. style’s sharpness and flare and New York’s popularity of on2 as well as smoothness. In addition, the San Diego community is expanding and adding new teams, clubs, and faces. Despite the growth of the community there are some politics that may be seen in the upcoming videos.
So why decide to make a video on salsa?
Besides it also being my interest it has seriously changed my life in terms of health, confidence, perspective, and willingness to become a better dancer. Basically I decided to combine my passion of salsa dancing and filming and creating what is called the San Diego Salsamentary. So if anyone has any questions, comments, or concerns please feel free to let me know and I may or may not incorporate it in the upcoming videos.
Thanks for allowing me to share my passion to the world… -

For those who went to the festival, but might have not had a chance to record (to help practice what you’ve learned) here are some of the videos from the San Diego Salsa Festival. Thank you to the instructors for letting us record.
They are in iPod/iPhone format, so practice where you can! Enjoy!
